The Basics
How long does it take to walk to Hilbre Island?

The walk to Hilbre Island is approximately 2 miles (3.2km) from West Kirby beach.

Allow 45–60 minutes each way, depending on conditions and your pace. The route crosses tidal sand and rock, so it's slower than walking on a path.

Can you walk to Hilbre Island at any time?

No — you can only walk to Hilbre Island during safe crossing windows.

The safe crossing rules are:

Safe to depart West Kirby

3 hours AFTER high tide

Be back on the mainland

3 hours BEFORE next high tide

Exception: If tide height is over 9.5m, add extra 30 minutes buffer.

Do I need special boots for the Hilbre walk?

Yes — you need sturdy waterproof boots, not trainers or flip-flops.

The route crosses rocks and sand, and you need proper grip and protection. The terrain is uneven and can be slippery, especially on the rocks. See our Safety Guide for the full packing list.

Can you see seals at Hilbre Island?

Yes! Hilbre Island is home to a colony of grey seals. They are often visible at low tide when they haul out on the rocks.

Seal watching tips:

  • • Keep a distance of at least 50 metres
  • • Never approach seals — let them come to you
  • • Keep noise to a minimum
  • • Best viewing is often from the north side of Hilbre Island

Is Hilbre Island walk suitable for children?

The walk can be suitable for older children who are good walkers, but consider:

  • It's a long walk (2 miles each way) over uneven terrain
  • Children must be able to complete the return journey in time
  • The route is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs
