Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team was called following concern that a dog walker might be stuck in mud on the beach off West Kirby Marine Lake. The walker and dog made their way off the beach safely, and no Coastguard assistance was needed.
What happened
A member of the public raised the alarm after seeing the walker and dog near an area of mud out from West Kirby Sailing Club. While the team was on its way, the caller contacted the Coastguard's Rescue Coordination Centre again to confirm that both were safe. The team was stood down and returned to station.
The Coastguard described the report as a call made with good intent. It was a response to a possible difficulty, not a confirmed rescue from mud. The source does not establish an exact incident date, or say that the tide caused the concern.
Mud and the changing tide
The team's reminder is relevant to anyone walking along this part of the coast: ground that looks firm can be difficult to cross or get out of, particularly as the tide comes in. It also advised dog owners not to put themselves at risk trying to rescue an animal in difficulty.
For anyone planning a walk beyond the shore, the local tide and crossing times and our guide to being cut off by the tide provide useful background. Checking tide times is part of planning a coastal walk, not a guarantee that a particular patch of beach is safe to cross.
If someone is in difficulty on the coast, or there is concern for their safety, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
