Wirral Coastguard Responds to Two Vessels Adrift

Wirral Coastguard located two unoccupied vessels drifting towards the shoreline. No lifeboat was tasked; the team reminded coastal visitors not to intervene themselves.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team responded to reports of two vessels drifting in the river. Coastguard Rescue Officers found both heading towards the shoreline, with nobody aboard.

What the team found

In its account, the team said the vessels were believed to have broken free from their moorings because of strong winds. This was a reported belief, rather than a confirmed cause. With no immediate risk to life, a lifeboat was not tasked.

The officers obtained details of both vessels and passed them to local sailing clubs to help identify and inform their owners. The post did not confirm that the vessels had been recovered, and did not name the precise location.

Reporting a concern safely

The useful reminder for anyone visiting the coast is not to put themselves at risk by investigating or intervening. The team's advice is to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if something concerning is seen on or near the coast.

This was not reported as a Hilbre crossing incident or a tidal cut-off. For a separate walk to the islands, check today's crossing times and read how people can become cut off by the tide. Those planning reminders do not explain the cause of this call-out.
