Wirral Coastguard passed on a Met Office yellow wind warning for the Wirral coastline and River Mersey on Friday 23 October 2026. The team said Storm Austen could bring gusts of 45 to 55 mph. The warning period ran until 9pm on 23 October.

The Coastguard's post listed River Mersey high tides at 9:57am, reaching 8.27m, and 10:05pm, reaching 8.79m, on the same day. The team warned that strong winds combined with high water could bring large waves, sea spray and overtopping, particularly around New Brighton and the Mersey waterfront.

Officers asked people to stay well back from sea walls, promenades and exposed coastal edges, especially around high tide. If you see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
