Coastguard Closes New Brighton Marine Lake Walkway as Waves Break Over Path

Wirral Coastguard closed the walkway at New Brighton Marine Lake after large waves broke over the path, during a coastal patrol following two call-outs.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team closed off the walkway at New Brighton Marine Lake after large waves broke over the path, making it unsafe for pedestrians.

The team reported two call-outs that morning, one involving another vessel that had washed ashore. Their post does not give further details of either incident or report a rescue. With a relatively large tide and strong onshore west-north-westerly winds, the officers remained in the area for a coastal safety patrol and gave advice to members of the public.

Keep clear of breaking waves

The Coastguard's advice was to keep well back from breaking waves and respect closures. Waves crossing a walkway can knock people off their feet and carry debris, including rocks and bricks. A familiar coastal path is not necessarily safe when water is breaking over it.

The closure described in the post should not be taken as a live update on whether the walkway is open now.

Planning a coastal walk

Tide times are only part of planning a visit: the conditions described by the team also included strong onshore winds. For a separate walk out to Hilbre, check the crossing times for today and read how the returning tide can cut off the route. Those crossing times are not a guide to whether New Brighton's walkway is safe.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
