Coastguard Checks on Shore Visitor Near Leasowe in Poor Visibility

Wirral Coastguard checked on a person near the Leasowe tideline in poor visibility. Officers monitored their return to shore and stood down when no assistance was needed.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team attended the Leasowe shore after a report of a person walking out towards the tideline from Leasowe Castle. Conditions were poor, with limited visibility out across the beach.

What happened

Officers had put on their equipment and begun making their way across the beach when they spotted the person walking back towards shore near Leasowe Lighthouse. The team monitored their progress until they were safely ashore.

The person confirmed that no assistance was needed and explained that they had been collecting fish from fishing nets. They also told the team that two other people near the tideline were carrying out the same activity and were not in difficulty. With no assistance required, the Coastguard team was stood down.

This was a welfare check, not a rescue of someone stranded or cut off by the tide. The source does not report either of those situations.

Reporting a concern

The team said the person who raised the alarm had done the right thing. In poor visibility, officers needed to establish whether the person on the shore was safe.

If you believe someone may be in difficulty along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Planning a coastal walk

Visibility and tide times are separate considerations when planning a walk on the foreshore. Checking the tide does not remove the need to consider the weather and whether you can see your route back.

For walks from West Kirby towards Hilbre, check today's crossing times before setting out. Our guide to being cut off by the tide explains the tidal risks on that crossing. Those are general planning reminders, not an explanation of what prompted this Leasowe call-out.
